The four members of the band ZIMBRU lean close to each other. The man on the left has long black-grey mottled hair, a full beard and is laughing. Next to him is a female figure with short dark hair, wearing a pinstripe suit. Next to her is a man with brown hair, a beard and a white shirt with black circular patterns. The woman on the far right is wearing large red sunglasses, long brown hair with short fringes and a furrowed brow.

ZIMBRU

Formerly known as Lights Out, ZIMBRU were an integral part of Romanian subculture and its underground indie scene. Around five years ago, the band from Cluj was reorganised: guitars were replaced by synthesisers, indie sounds were swapped for a modern version of disco, and Lights Out became ZIMBRU. At the time, they were already stars in their home country, but as usual, nobody over here took notice. After their first album »Little Creatures« caused quite a stir in (Southern) Eastern Europe, the band followed up with a series of singles, clearly showing the change in sound that Oana Pop (on drums), Andrei Bobiș (on synth) and the charismatic singer Teodora Retegan were aiming for: disco remains the foundation, but instead of funky melodies, they’re reaching more and more towards the eighties. Lyrically, it’s all about climate anxiety, gender trouble, and the films of French filmmaker Agnes Varda.
