Tarwater

In order to really understand Tarwater, one should turn to the genesis of the band from the underground music and art scene of the GDR in the eighties. Even though Tarwater wasn’t founded until 1995, the common roots of its two members Ronald Lippok and Bernd Jestram reach back to the East Berlin band Ornament & Verbrechen (recently commemorated with the eponymous exhibition at Galerie Pankow). Over the years, Tarwater have constantly refined their critical examination of rock sensibilities through releases on labels such as Kitty-Yo, Morr Music, and Bureau B. Given the visual power of their enigmatic soundscapes, it’s no coincidence that they have often collaborated with filmmakers. Incidentally, the band name refers to the credits of a release by the US psychedelic band Love, which featured a musician named C. Tarwater – a story of inspiration that has a lot to do with Lippok and Jestram’s longing for America, but also with their knowledge of the great forgetfulness of historiography for the protagonists away from the spotlight.
