Pop-Kultur lokal 2022 #2: »Intersection Sounds«

Dancefloors are political. A scene that aims to create utopias and celebrates freedom can’t lose sight of people’s diversity and their needs. With this event, Intersection Sounds wants to take a critical look at the current state of the Berlin club scene. Although many Berlin clubs are already talking about safer spaces where marginalised groups are protected from hate, discrimination, violence and hurtful acts, the reality is different in many locations. With the help of collectives, promoter, DJs and clubbers, we want to look at the interplay of race, class, gender and ableism: Does the Berlin club scene merely engage in whitewashing? Which postcolonial structures are in effect every weekend? Who has visibility in the Berlin scene and who doesn’t? Who has access to the scene, who is denied it, and why? The programme of the event starts with various workshops and performances, followed by a party. Both the workshop leader, promoter of the event and the artists are people from marginalised groups who will give accounts on the discriminatory structures and power relations in the Berlin club scene. With this invitation, we want to give people a voice and offer visibility to those who otherwise have difficulty accessing the scene. After all, representation matters!
