Lambrini Girls
Shouting (as fiercely as possible, of course) how you identify, accompanied by a raging thunderstorm of crushing power chords, booming feedback, and propulsive drum beats can only be liberating (and therefore healthy). »Help Me, I’m Gay« by Lambrini Girls is one of their hits, displaying fiery outbursts of rage and a queer, still too rare form of aggression and resistance, and, most importantly, shows them having fun doing it. Phoebe Lunny, the Brighton punk band’s frontwoman, can’t be ignored when she shoots against pseudo-feminists and transphobic jerks, managing to be both humorous and dead serious. However, the Lambrini Girls’ anger is not only negative – it also serves as an affirmation. After all, an insult to the boys’ club that the British music scene remains can of course also be read as a song of praise for those who are still not (allowed to be) part of it. Iggy Pop, who has already outed himself as a huge fan of the band, has also recognised the value in this.
