Ivo Dimchev
If the authoritative American cultural magazine The New Yorker writes that you’re one of the most famous Bulgarian songwriters (with the headline »The Extravagant Exuberance of Ivo Dimchev«), that would certainly be a reason to freak out. Not so for the choreographer, theatre maker, visual artist, photographer, and musician Ivo Dimchev, who seems to have been born with a consistently cultivated, cool composure. In general, Dimchev – whose music is based on the dramatically expressive Bermuda triangle of, say, Rufus Wainwright, Sparks, and Klaus Nomi – can’t complain about a lack of genetic talent. Although only in his forties, Dimchev has already created more than 30 stage works, won international awards for dance and theatre, and presented his output worldwide in the overlapping fields of music, dance, and theatre. He also gives masterclasses at various renowned institutions around the world, such as the National Theatre Academy in Budapest and the Royal Dance Conservatory of Belgium in Antwerp. The queer activist’s current base is Los Angeles, so it will be interesting to see how the lights and shadows of Hollywood affect his work.
