The name? futurebae thought of it in her sleep. Lina, as she’s actually called, shrugged her shoulders a bit apologetically when this question came up during a social media Q&A. That’s just the way it is. In general, the genre-unconstrained artist has a soft spot for moonstruck content. This is also something the title track to her 2023 album »BLA« hints at, with lyrics shaped by nightlife, like »Ich schlafe nicht mehr / zu viel hin und her« (»I don’t sleep anymore / too much back and forth«). And the sound is both upbeat and cloudy. A mixture of – OK, now to drop a few genres – electro-pop, minimal hip-hop, dancehall and traces of Neue Deutsche Welle. No one knows how to channel that shimmering moment between awake and dreaming away into little (and big) hits better than futurebae. Music that sparks transitional states – including departures from sobriety. Intoxicating music. It’s all about everything, never just pleasant blah blah blah. So any titular »BLA« isn’t about talking nonsense – it actually stands for »Berlin Love Affair«. Time to slip into another state.
