Lady Donli

With her 2019 debut album »Enjoy Your Life«, Lady Donli immediately established herself as the self-confident new voice of Nigeria’s alté community – alté is Nigerian slang for alternative. The Cleveland-born artist, who grew up in Abuja (Nigeria) and lives in London and Lagos, consistently refused to be pigeonholed into one style. With role models such as The Fugees, Brenda Fassie, Madman Jaga, Erykah Badu, Angelique Kidjo, Tony Tetuila, and Six Foot Plus, her music is equally diverse, ranging from hip-hop and R&B to Afrobeat and highlife. Perhaps even more influential were her older brothers, who introduced her to rap music at an early age, prompting her dream of a career in music. Given this kaleidoscope of inspirations, it comes as no surprise that Lady Donli titled her second full-length, released last year, »Pan African Rockstar – The Sophomore Album«. It’s a self-confident political act that integrates pan-African themes such as oppression, resistance and escapism and at the same time, a wonderfully cheeky endeavour that holds a mirror up to Western audiences and the stereotypes they hold.
