Awareness

The icon shows three stylized black pictogram figures standing side by side. The middle figure is shown larger than the two outer figures. Each figure has a small heart symbol at chest height. The background is grey.

During the official festival opening hours, a trained awareness team is on duty to help ensure that all visitors feel comfortable and safe. You can find the awareness team on the festival grounds and at the meeting point.

In case of an emergency, or if you need support in a conflict situation, you can also approach any member of the festival staff, who can directly contact the awareness team for you.

Awareness-Team

An awareness team is available at all times during rehearsals and throughout the event. Details on the team’s on-site presence and how to reach them will be published on this page before the festival.

Awareness Guidelines – What Can I Do?

You are part of creating a respectful environment and a space for diversity in which everyone can feel safe.

  • If you notice that someone near you may need help because they are not feeling well, please inform the awareness team or another member of staff who can contact them.
  • Ask whether the person would like help. A “no” is also completely okay.
  • Respect other people’s boundaries: physical contact only with consent.
  • Please stay aware of your own social privileges and positions of power.
  • If you witness or experience behaviour that crosses boundaries, call the awareness team or ask another member of staff to do so for you.
  • We also offer support with de-escalating conflict situations, especially when emotions are running high and there is no time for an in-depth resolution.
  • Share feedback or complaints – we listen and take action.

If you feel unsure or cannot assess a situation, please speak to our awareness team.

All reports are taken seriously and answered promptly and confidentially. No decisions about how to respond to an incident will be made without the consent of the affected person.

We are committed to continuously improving our awareness concept. That’s why we welcome your perspectives, experiences, and suggestions. You can contact us at any time: awareness@pop-kultur.berlin.

Our Values

Pop-Kultur Festival is a space for diversity, where people with different experiences, identities, and backgrounds come together. We are committed to creating an environment in which everyone can feel welcome.

We understand the Pop-Kultur Festival as a cultural space for shared exchange and open dialogue grounded in democratic values.

These values include mutual respect, recognition of social diversity, and a clear commitment to combating discrimination in all its forms.

We ask all participants – visitors, partners, artists, guests, and staff – to uphold these values and to recognise that we all share responsibility for making sure everyone at our festival feels accepted and safe.

We maintain a strict zero-tolerance policy towards discrimination in all its forms, including ableism, antisemitism, Islamophobia, racism, sexism, transphobia, queerphobia, and all forms of violence, including insults, harassment, threats, bullying, hate, and incitement. This is based on the General Equal Treatment Act (AGG) and the Berlin State Anti-Discrimination Act (LADG).

Depending on the nature of an incident, or in the case of repeated incidents, we reserve the right to exercise our house rules and deny individuals access to the event.

We are committed to learning from feedback, incidents, and mistakes. You can contact us at any time:  awareness@pop–kultur.berlin

In our Code of Conduct, you will find the behavioural principles that arise from our values and self-understanding, as well as the standards we commit to ourselves and expect all participants of the Pop-Kultur Festival to follow.

Awareness Concept

Together with you, we want to keep building more awareness and help shape an even better Pop-Kultur Festival for everyone. Our awareness concept contains information that applies to everyone present at the festival.

The Pop-Kultur Festival offers a space for diversity, where people with different experiences, identities, and backgrounds come together. Together with you and everyone attending, we want to shape this space with respect and make it as safe as possible. At the same time, we understand this as an ongoing process that we must continue to develop collectively. Our awareness team is here to support that.

  • Promoting respectful interaction: We strive to create a diverse space and do not tolerate any form of discrimination, including ableism, antisemitism, Islamophobia, racism, sexism, transphobia, queerphobia, or any form of violence, including insults, harassment, threats, bullying, hate, and incitement.
  • Support in cases of discrimination: We offer help to anyone who has experienced boundary-crossing or discriminatory behaviour, or who feels unsafe.
  • Support in difficult situations: We assist people who feel uncomfortable or who are otherwise not feeling well.
  • De-escalation in conflicts: In tense interactions, we offer de-escalation support, especially when emotions are escalating and there is no time for a deeper resolution.
  • Documentation of complaints and feedback: We collect and document complaints and feedback related to awareness and follow up on them.
  • Respect for personal boundaries: Please respect the boundaries of others, especially regarding physical contact – this should only happen with consent.
  • Help in (medical) emergencies: If someone near you needs help, please inform the awareness team or another member of staff who can contact us. Of course, medical staff are also on site for emergency care.
  • Support around neurodiversity-related needs and questions: We are here to support you with sensory overload, shutdowns, or communication difficulties.
