While other singer-songwriters seek out stillness and cast their emotions into compact forms, Lael Neale seems driven by restlessness. More often than not, it is danceable lo-fi grooves that form the core of her arrangements; above them, she unfolds emotional insights rendered in a deliberately plainspoken register.

Simplicity, in fact, is central to Lael Neale’s entire artistic language. The Virginia-born US artist usually pairs her voice with only a handful of elements – a raw guitar, soft piano chords and minimalist drum-machine beats. It is precisely this reduction that creates a pull so immersive it borders on the hypnotic. Since 2020, she has been signed to the legendary label Sub Pop and has continued to evolve with every release. Most recently, she released »Altogether Stranger«, her fourth album in ten years.

Echoes of Cat Power, Spacemen 3 and John Lennon help her bring order to creative chaos – and transform the feelings of estrangement suggested in the title into something tangible. Yet even if traces of other artists shimmer through, the trance-like drone-folk of Lael Neale ultimately remains something entirely her own.
