great area
great area is the project of British artist Georgie Nettell. Her music moves between radical reduction and deliberately placed blur: minimal lo-fi structures, fragmented beats, and manipulated samples form fragile tracks somewhere between trip-hop and experimental pop, carrying something distinctly ghostly – almost extraterrestrial. Then there are those hovering vocals, placed as if the sugar-sweet melodies were being whispered directly into your ear.
And what do the lyrics revolve around? Among other things, everyone who has annoyed great area over the years, as she notes in a short statement accompanying the album »Light Decline«, which, like its follow-up »Good Coding«, was released on the London label Relaxin Records.
Yes, there is undoubtedly something sad about this music – but in a way that feels like a half-real dream or a pleasurable hallucination. All the more reason to be excited about what might unfold live at the Kulturbrauerei.
