»The Color of Strength«

At the heart of German-Nigerian filmmaker Idris Aleshinloye’s documentary are basketball player Deeshyra Thomas and her time at ALBA Berlin. »The Color of Strength« is far more than a sports film about basketball. It is a story about identity, belonging, and visibility, exploring the challenges faced by women in elite sport while connecting personal experiences with questions of racism, exclusion, inclusion, and self-determination. Through personal insights and a focus on people with Down syndrome, »The Color of Strength« shows how sport can create spaces for empowerment, community, and social participation. Basketball emerges as a place of encounter, a shared language that transcends cultural and social boundaries, and a means of building confidence and belonging. The result is a portrait of Deeshyra Thomas that is both deeply personal and unmistakably political.

The film is directed by German-Nigerian documentary filmmaker and cinematographer Idris Aleshinloye, whose platform IOA Documentary Films is dedicated to bringing stories and perspectives into view that are too often overlooked in public discourse. With »The Color of Strength«, he presents a film that understands sport not simply as competition, but as a social space where collective strength, belonging, and meaningful participation can flourish.
