deBasement
The duo deBasement operates at the intersection of club culture and pop, with a sound that feels as accessible as it is defiant. Behind the project are Los Angeles singer Alli Logout, known for her work with Special Interest, and Margo XS, whose musical roots lie in Montreal’s queer club scene. The two first connected through a shared label environment.
Their first two tracks – »FRONT LEFT SPEAKER« and »FTDJ (Thank God)« – already signalled a clear aesthetic vision in 2024: stripped-back structures, club-driven energy, and a distinctly original sense of dramaturgy. In the wake of this striking debut statement, Alli Logout and Margo XS toured as support for Model/Actriz and Marie Davidson.
The name deBasement points programmatically to the place where this music originates: the basement – in French, also legible as a kind of »cave« – evokes the sheltered space of an underground studio, a site far removed from daylight and public display. At the same time, it nods to the Pixies song »Debaser« (1989). This double coding already makes clear what deBasement are after: retreat and openness at once, pop as a form that emerges from concealment and perhaps, for that very reason, carries within it the potential for larger stages.
