Sinem

Reaching back to the sixties, the history of Turkish guest workers in Germany is far from over, continuing into the present day. Sinem, an Alevi from Munich, traces these roots in her songs, less as a detective and more as a medium. Sinem channels the era in which Türküola from Cologne was not only the biggest label for Turkish, Kurdish and Alevi music but also the biggest indie label in all of Germany. We hear echoes of divas like Neşe Karaböcek along with the psychedelic Anatolian rock of Derdiyoklar and Erkin Kora – never one-dimensional and certainly not merely as a historical reference but rather reinterpreted for 2024. New wave is mixed into the already vibrant musical landscape, then synth-laden disco. Masterfully presented not only by singer Sinem but also by her congenial partners, who are industrious figures on the Munich scene: Tom Wu (drums, loops, What Are People For?) and Tagar (guitar, Friends of Gas).
