Poetry opens up possibilities in all directions, and Candice Nembhard’s biography is the perfect example of this. The event series ALL FRUITS RIPE and The R.A.P Party in Berlin, The Black Borough archive, the creative consulting agency Poet & Prophetess and YEOJA Mag – these are all projects that Nembhard has created or had a hand in. All of them, in one way or another, are committed to the power of language to catalyse social action. Under the name okcandice, Nembhard is active as a multidisciplinary artist, author and performer, equally inspired by the poetry of public speaking and the lyricism of movements. Her text-based works and soundscapes draw on the diverse traditions of spoken word, storytelling, dance and vocal archives. Through sonic transmissions, okcandice explores the impact of oratorical practice on queer, contemporary spaces.
