Melanie Jame Wolf & friends: »Oh! Oh! Tonight!«
Australian artist Melanie Jame Wolf presents a new episode of her »Tonight!« performance series: »Oh! Oh! Tonight!« has been realised exclusively for Pop-Kultur. In the piece, Wolf continues to scrutinise the meaning and use of language in pop music. Words such as »oh«, »yeah« and »tonight« are constants in the repertoire of song lyrics and performative presentations; we hear them and often see their visualisation in the context of performances. But what does this do to our perception of these (often subtle) keywords? At what point of repetition do these words become tired in their power, perhaps even lose all meaning? Or is it the other way round as they gain an intensity through their constant repetition?
In three-minute pop songs, these words are either complex mantras, or a complete reduction of themselves, which in their arbitrariness expose the unshakable associations with sexuality, power and desire.
With »Oh! Oh! Tonight!«, Melanie Jame Wolf explores the pleasures and dangers of erotic stagings, poetic narratives and ultimately, a politics of shared pop imagination as well. As a visual artist and choreographer with a special feel for language, interdisciplinary performances and her very own video-installation aesthetic, Melanie Jame Wolf will present her Commissioned Work that involves all the senses, letting us look forward to a night in which eternity will find its origin.
