EVÎN is one of the most intriguing new voices in R&B. Inspired by artists like James Blake, FKA Twigs, Rosalía and Sufjan Stevens, the Berlin-based singer fuses elements from different genres with her Kurdish roots to create a distinctive sound that’s rarely heard in this country. In her songs and visuals, the trained jazz vocalist combines East and West – especially in her collaboration with the German-Turkish stylist Esma Patkavak. EVÎN’s lyrics are rarely about heartbreak, instead taking on sociopolitical themes such as forced displacement, the culture of remembrance and belonging – subjects that have always been a part of her as someone living between cultures. For EVÎN, singing about these topics is an act of empowerment, as she finds it easier than talking about them. Music as therapy – healing for the listeners as well.
