»Echos musikalischer Erinnerungen aus der DDR«
It’s been more than 30 years since the fall of the Berlin Wall and German reunification. Unfortunately, however, the two states that were separated for so long still haven’t really come together – politically, that is, but also in terms of pop culture in West and East Germany. A good example of the latter observation is the heavy metal subculture in the GDR, where a considerable metal scene developed in the eighties that has meanwhile all but disappeared. This raises questions: What happened to these communities after reunification? Were they able to find their feet, or did they sink into insignificance? How much visibility do musicians from East Germany have today?
This discussion on such remembrance work, which mainly draws on the memories of individual figures and their personal archives, will take place as part of the exhibition »Heavy Metal in the GDR« and will be moderated by cultural producer Sandra Teitge. Other participants are Vincent Bababoutilabo, who will talk about the migration society of East Germany and labour structure in the GDR, and author Robert Mießner.
